Kraft Heinz cuts 2,500 jobs following merger

Rumors circulated that Kraft Heinz would cut jobs after the two companies merged last month and Wednesday those rumors were found to be true when the company announced a large number of layoffs.

WLKY noted that the company is laying off 2,500 workers, which is equivalent to 5 percent of its total workforce.

Michael Mullen, a spokesman for Kraft Heinz, said that the layoffs were being done to "ensure we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible" and that it was a "very difficult, but necessary, decision."

The cuts include getting rid of several hundred employees at Kraft headquarters in Illinois. That headquarters is planning on moving to a smaller location in Chicago while the Heinz side will likely continue to operate out of Pittsburgh.

According to its website, Kraft Heinz is now the third-largest food and beverage company in North America and the fifth-largest in the world. Both companies rake in more than $1 billion in sales every year.
