The U.N. Security Council announced that they will vote Saturday on a resolution put together by the U.S. that asks other countries not to recognize the upcoming Sunday vote on Crimea splitting away from Ukraine.
According to Voice of America, 13 of 15 Council countries expect to vote for the resolution, while Russia will almost certainly veto. The question lies in how China votes as they have often sided with Russia over Crimea, but have made no indication into which direction they will go.
The March 16 Crimea referendum will allow citizens the choice to either split off to Russia or increase independence from Ukraine, but not joining Russia.
The U.N. resolution comes just a day after talks between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov failed to offer any resolution, with Russia determined not to back down, reports NPR.
Lavrov spokes with reporters and said his country will "respect the choice of the Crimean people," which isn't surprising given that it is almost certain they will vote in favor of joining Russia.
VOA notes that on Saturday, Ukrainian Defense Minister says that Russian troops entered into the Kherson region and Ukrainian forces "repelled" them.
