‘True Detective’: Top 10 Duos for Season Two

Now that the first season of True Detective is over, we can finally take a breath. The case of a brutal serial killer attacking women and children in the Louisiana Bayou is over, but not without two of the greatest performances to ever grace the small screen.

If someone told us a year ago that Matthew McConaughey would not only do a television show, but that it wouldn’t be a romantic comedy and it would require him to deliver philosophical soliloquies, it would be impossible to believe. But he rose to the challenge, just like he did in Dallas Buyers Club.

Woody Harrelson is always great, but he didn’t do much television work either before this. His performance as the conflicted Marty was genius - he had to react to all the bizarre stuff going on in Rust’s mind. Essentially, he was the audience. Sometimes we got Rust, and often we didn’t and neither did Marty.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto has said that season two of True Detective will be a completely different story. McConaughey and Harrelson will not be back, so it will be quite a challenge to fill those shoes. We know that HBO and Pizzolatto can’t go back to television stars after two A-list movie actors.

So who could replace them? One has to think out of the box here, so here’s some really wild suggestions for season two.

[new page = Lawrence and Nyong’o]
10. Jennifer Lawrence & Lupita Nyong’o

After spending a lot of time together during the awards season, who wouldn’t want to see Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o work together? Since Lawrence already has an Oscar, her loss to Nyong’o probably doesn’t sting as much, so hopefully there’s no animosity between the two.

They could play young detectives paired together, despite their superior’s objections to them not working with a veteran. They investigate a crime so horrific that it throws their young lives upside down. It’s the end of their innocence.

[new page = McDormand and Harden]
9. Frances McDormand & Marcia Gay Harden

Two more Oscar winners come together for a journey inside the mind of a killer through the eyes of two experienced detectives. McDormand has experience in this realm, thanks to her iconic Fargo performance and Harden has done work on Law & Order: SVU. Harden has done work in film and television, and she’d make a great partner with McDormand.

[new page = Gosling and Cooper]
8. Ryan Gosling & Bradley Cooper

Sure, this team would make the girls in the audience swoon, but both are stars who’ve proven they can take meaty material and run with it. Cooper has shown some skills outside of his Hangover persona, but so far, it’s all been with David O. Russell. It’d be nice to see him do great work with others. Plus, they were in Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines together, but only had a few moments in the same scene.

[new page = Hanks and Gordon-Levitt]
7. Tom Hanks & Joseph Gordon-Levitt

The possibility of these two working together would just be insane. If Pizzolatto is looking to team up a young star with a veteran, this would be the best way to go.

[new page = Steep and Wood]
5. Meryl Streep & Evan Rachel Wood

Like a Hanks/Gordon-Levitt team, this one would have a veteran female detective - one who's had to push down barriers in a male-dominated world - with a younger detective who has a different perspective on things. Streep really doesn’t do television, but Wood has worked with HBO before. She starred in Todd Haynes’ haunting Mildred Pierce miniseries.

[new page - Cumberbatch and Pine]
4. Benedict Cumberbatch & Chris Pine

Everyone wants Cumberbatch in everything and that makes sense. He’s a great actor. He could be paired with his Star Trek Into Darkness opponent Chris Pine, who is in need of some better material to help his career. Cumberbatch could play a British detective investigating an international crime and Pine is the American he’s stuck working with. Sherlock/True Detective crossover!

[new page = Clooney and Penn]
3. George Clooney & Sean Penn

Sean Penn should really do something on television, as should George Clooney. The two could be similar to the McConaughey/Harrelson teaming, with two veteran detectives with very different backgrounds stuck on a case together.

[new page = Pitt and LaBeouf]
2. Brad Pitt & Shia LaBeouf

If Shia LaBeouf really wants to be taken seriously, he should take a TV role. TV right now is far more adventurous than anything going on in Hollywood. He could work with Brad Pitt, who just made a World War II movie with him. If they’re interested in working together and if that movie turns out to be good, this could make for an interesting team-up.

[new page = Affleck and Damon]
1. Ben Affleck & Matt Damon

Who wouldn't pay to see these best friends team up again? Affleck and Damon are great friends, but they haven’t done much together in the years since Good Will Hunting. They need to do something again and Pizzolotto’s new material could be it. If he decides to tell a story in the Northeast, this is the team to go with.
