David Beckham, one of the most famous sports figures in the world, announced his retirement from professional soccer.
Beckham, 38, recently won a title with Paris Saint-Germain. During his career, he has played with Manchester United, Real Madrid and the LA Galaxy. He won titles with both Madrid and the Galaxy. Internationally, Beckham made a record 115 appearances playing for his country’s national team.
“I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,” Beckham said in a statement, reports The Associated Press. “If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I'm fortunate to have realized those dreams.”
Beckham is married to former Spice Girl and fashion designer Victoria Beckham. According to CNN, he earns a reported $46 million a year, making him the richest athlete in England. Forbes puts him as the eighth richest athlete in the world and is No. 32 on the magazine’s list of wealthiest celebrities.
Beckham said that one of his “proudest achievements” was being captain for the English national club. “I'm honoured to represent England both on and off the pitch. I want to thank all my team-mates, the great managers that I had the pleasure of learning from.”
He also thanked his fans for their support, noting that they gave him “the strength to succeed.”
