The National Society of Film Critics had their say over the weekend and they surprisingly went the unsurprising route for many of their picks. A year after going against the grain, the group went with Spotlight as their Best Picture.
Last year, the group caused a stir by picking Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye To Language as the best film of 2014 instead of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood or Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman. This year, Spotlight easily won with 23 votes. Todd Haynes’ Carol came in second with 17 votes, while George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road earned 13.
Spotlight also won for Best Screenplay for director Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer’s script. McCarthy came in second for Best Director with 21 votes, but lost to Haynes because he was on less ballots.
In addition to its Best director win, Ed Lachman won Best Cinematography for Carol.
The most surprising win of the day came for Michael B. Jordan, the star of Creed, who won Best Actor. Charlotte Rampling won Best Actress for 45 Years and Mark Rylance of Bridge of Spies won Best Supporting Actor. Kristen Stewart won Best Supporting Actress for Clouds of Sils Maria.
