The Hollywood Foreign Press Association makes no sense. The 73rd annual Golden Globes last night did very little to stabilize the Oscar race, but at least a crop of movies get to trumpet their wins on posters, trailers and TV spots.
The biggest winner of the night was Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant, which took home three awards. It beat out Spotlight for Best Picture - Drama and Leonardo DiCaprio might have begun his march towards an Oscar win with his Best Actor - Drama Globe. Inarritu also won Best Director.
This does seem to bolster The Revenant’s award season standing. However, it’s worth noting that Inarritu’s Birdman lost Best Picture - Comedy/Drama last year to Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, but still won the Best Picture Oscar. Inarritu also failed to win Best Director at the Globes for his previous film. In other words, it’s way too early to bet against Spotlight.
So, if you’re looking for where the Globes might have had the strongest impact, it’s probably in the acting categories. Brie Larson has long been the frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar for Room, so the Globe win helped cement that position. Matt Damon also proved to be a strong contender to trip up DiCaprio with a win for The Martian, which also won Best Picture - Comedy/Musical (even though it’s neither of those).
Based on the reaction of the audience at the Globes, Sylvester Stallone is really starting to look like a lock for Best Supporting Actor for Creed. Amazingly, it was his first win and nomination at the Globes since the original Rocky (1976). If he’s even nominated by the Oscars, it will also be his first Oscar nomination since Rocky.
The Best Supporting Actress race went way off track, as Kate Winslet surprisingly won for Steve Jobs. Jane Fonda of Youth had been pegged to win, but that seems a big shaky. Honestly though, did these people actually watch The Hateful Eight? Why isn’t this award being dominated by Jennifer Jason Leigh?
Also, Jennifer Lawrence practically guaranteed a well-deserved nomination for Joy by winning Best Actress - Musical/Comedy (even though this film, like The Martian, isn’t that much of a comedy).
Elsewhere, Son of Saul and Inside Out began their trek to an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Animated Feature. Aaron Sorkin picked up Best Screenplay for Steve Jobs and Ennio Morricone won for his Hateful Eight score. Lastly, “Writing’s On The Wall” from Spectre won Best Original Song.
