President Obama makes a statement regarding net neutrality

President Obama has spoken out about net neutrality, which he made a promise to take care of when it came to the issue while he was first running for the White House.

The Huffington Post reported that the President made a statement in which he showed his support for the idea of net neutrality, a debate that has had people on both sides of the equation.

His statement included that “An open Internet is essential to the American economy, and increasingly to our very way of life.” In addition, President Obama also asked the Federal Communications Commission for the implementation of “the strongest possible rules to protect Net Neutrality.”

The issue of Net Neutrality has been on going, especially since the chairman for the FCC has made proposals that only serve to confuse the people with proposals that had loopholes and didn’t seem to allow for reclassification of broadband service under Title II of the Telecommunications Act.

Public pressure for the White House to act has been ongoing for almost a year, with activities putting together hearings and rallies in order for people to discuss their views on the issue.

Wired reported that the move from the President would also prevent internet service providers from restricting what people are able to see and do on the Internet.

Another part of his statement read, “I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper.”
