Facebook has announced their messenger service has half a billion users

Recently in the last few months, Facebook caused confusion and ire when they forced users to download a separate app for the messaging features. Now, they have released the number of users who actively go onto the app.

According to Forbes, the Facebook messenger app has 500 million subscribers, just behind Facebook’s WhatsApp, in which 600 million individuals make use of that particular app.

The announcement itself came from Facebook’s blog, in which the director of Facebook’s product management, Peter Martinazzi, said “This is an exciting milestone but with half a billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do.”

Facebook apparently still wants to get the Messenger numbers up to the same amount of users as on the website. David Marcus, who heads the Messenger service, said they are “going for a billion.”

Reuters reported that back in April when the company announced to users the need to download the Messenger app in order to connect, Facebook said that there were 200 million people using the service.
